LO2: Planning the promo (mind map and moodboard) (Matt)

we have chosen to do a film trailer to promote a film, documentary or program

We have decided to do a trailer for a short film called the white room, as short film about a kidnapping. We have studied the narrative and script to brain storm ideas about what we are going to make.
We have created a mood board to encapsulate what our trailer will be about ,what it will look like and to give us inspiration

The mood board above attempts to show the initial ideas of the group while planning the tone and narrative of this short film. Some of its features include the opening of Alan Moore's 1988 comic book "V for vendetta" we decided that we wanted to use a technique similar to this in both the final film and the promo for it. Using a crosscutting sequence shows contrast between people and locations and helps to establish a binary opposition. As well as this the are also images of criminals wearing masks, places in Sheffield (as to show some of the types of locations we would be interested in using for the film) and stills from both the Danial Craig era of James Bond films, "Trainspotting" and "Brick" as that these were the type of films that we would like to pastiche.

LO2 Gaining permisions (jacob)

We emailed the band to gain permission to make a music video for them. We received an email back and we need to plan a meet up to discus the project.

For my Unit 15 work, me and a group of students have contacted a local band in order to make them a music video, below are the emails we sent to the band to try and arrange the production of the music video.

LO 2 inisial ideas .

For this unit i am working with Frazer, Josh, Jacob.

So far we have looked into two bands.

Brookin- an indi rock band from sheffield. we like their song 'Break in to my mind' https://soundcloud.com/brooklinband
  • Evening Coffee, a band who one of our group members know.

We were forced to change form our initial ideas as we were not able to obtain a high quality sound track from brooklin of their song. As contingincy plan we have decided to make a triler for the film that Josh, Jacob and Frazur are making for unit 5, we dicided to do this as we feel it is a safe venture and we will have easy acsses to client feed back and have a good undersanding of the theme we are trying to create.

LO1: film genre representation recap

LO1: Applying theory (matt)

Genre characteristics

DMX - X Gun' Give It To Ya

The key characteristics of rap videos that you see in most black rap videos that you can see in this video is.
  • violence throughout the lyrics- this inforses the patriotically
  • city setting throughout
  • hoodies (2:33)
  • low lighting throughout (connotes evil)
  • golden jewellery
  • gangs (2:41)
These characteristics come from DMX's star persona and builds his brand and his image and promotes hyper masculinity and patriarchy which is also very common in this style of music.

Relationship between music and visuals

Rudimental - Waiting All Night ft. Ella Eyre

The tempo of the music in this music video has key relation with the visuals that you see on screen, for example when he is first admitted to hospital (0:44) the tempo of the music is very slow which connotes the severity of the situation and the first time he smiles (1:23) the music tempo picks up and has more positive connotations. When he first tries to go on a bike again (3:30) the music slows down to build suspense and the volume and speed begins to gradually increase to build suspense and to denote the break through in the narrative up to the point he successfully rides his bike again (4:07) .

Relationship between lyrics and visuals

Eminem - When I'm Gone

The lyrics link to the visuals throughout the video and adds to the connotations and meaning of the song for example when Eminem says "I turn around, find a gun on the ground
Cock it, put it to my brain, scream Die Shady! And pop it" at (4:50) this shows how his alter ego 'Slim shady' has ruined his family relationship and how he is putting and end to 'Slim shady' and also links to the beginning where he introduces himself as Marshall instead of 'Slim shady'. The
